Auto Tune is a great tool for us mediocre singers who want to introduce melody into our songs. It’s also a great tool for good singers who want to clean up their vocals a little. Either way, if you’re going to use it, you should be using it correctly. And if you’re broke, you definitely should be checking out the free pitch corrector that comes within your DAW. So here’s how to Auto Tune your vocals in Logic Pro X (For Free):
The principles that I’m going to teach you are applicable to all pitch correction software e.g Melodyne, Autotune etc.
The most common mistake I see people making with Auto Tune or pitch correction is that they select the plug-in and think the work is done without changing any settings. Now, this will Auto Tune your vocals, but it won’t sound pretty (unless your song is in C Major). The first thing you must do, before even thinking about Auto Tune, is find out what key your song is in. After you do that, you must make sure that your pitch correction software is set to the same key. Now, when it automatically tunes your voice, you won’t sound like a traumatic cat wailing (hopefully).
That’s basically all the knowledge you need to start your Auto Tuned adventure, but you should also consider experimenting with the correction speed or response. A fast correction speed or response will make you sound more robotic, giving you more of a T-Pain sound. However, using a slower correction speed or response will make your vocals sound much more natural and will generally make the Auto Tune harder to notice. Play around and see what works best for you!
