​Yesterday I looked at my YouTube stats and I realised something interesting…
If you’ve been following my journey over the past 3 years you’d know that I started turning my YouTube gaming channel into a music focused channel at the end of 2019…
After building a business that works for me and pays my bills without me having to do too much, I’ve finally got the time to focus on music and that.
I’m also in the process of building my music business up so I can live off “music money” from next year…
The thing is:
I was happy about this change…but not everyone shared my excitement…
When I first started making music related content again, I got comments like:
“Go back to making ARK videos”
“You’re killing your channel”
Etc.
But I saw this coming…
This happened every time I changed the game I played on my channel.
People will moan at you for not doing what THEY want you to do…
You gotta ignore those people and do what’s best for YOU.
Or you’ll end up depressed and unhappy.
Anyways, the start of the transition wasn’t easy…
Since I’ve got so many old gaming videos that still bring in hundreds of thousands of hours of watch time – it’s hard for YouTube to realise that my channel is all about music now.
But, I kept at it.
Even when my video only got 50 views – I made more videos.
And over the past few months I’ve started to see things pick up.
My music focused videos are getting more comments, more views, more likes.
I’m consistently building my audience of people who are interested in music…
I’m consistently releasing new music and getting more monthly listeners on Spotify…
And that’s not all. Here’s the interesting thing I realised yesterday:
A bunch of my music related videos have over 1,000 views.
(this is a good benchmark to hit, my videos that hit 1,000 views tend to rank and bring in more views over time)
And a few (about 3 I think) have hit over 10,000 views.
(hitting 10,000 views is a VERY good sign. Once videos pass the 10k views mark YouTube starts to show it to more people and the videos rapidly grow)
Great stuff, right?
It’s looking like things will REALLY pop off next year…which was the plan from the beginning!
Those guys that told me:
“Go back to making ARK videos”
“You’re killing your channel”
Were WRONG.
But we all knew that already ;)…
There’s a few lessons in here…
The biggest one is you need to TRY things and not worry about what people think.
Try making content for your target audience and KEEP AT IT.
I uploaded over 100 music-related videos…
They haven’t all popped off yet…
The good news is:
Now I can look back at the videos that WORKED and make more videos like that.
And of course, some of the videos that haven’t popped yet…will pop off later…
That’s how my biggest video “how to write a rap song” ended up with over a million views…
