What’s the most important part of your song?
I’ll reveal the answer in a minute but, try to guess…
A big mistake a lot of artists make is simply having a crap structure for their song…
When you have bad arrangement, you have a bad song…
Thing is:
Our brains are trained to expect certain structures when we hear a song.
So when you arrange your song in an unusual way (because you don’t know what you’re doing) it will end up feeling strange and unpleasant for most listeners…
That’s why you need to know the basics of how to arrange your song.
You need to know what’s expected…
You need to know the fundamentals…
Once you have the basics down, then you can switch things up if you want (at your own peril)…
So, what’s the most important part of your song?
The answer:
The CHORUS.
The HOOK.
(And…whatever you say in the first 30 seconds of your song – because a bad opening will stop people from listening to your whole song)
So treat it that way…
The chorus is your place to tell the listener the point of the song.
It’s your opportunity to sneak inside your listener’s ear cavity and stash your catchy melody (and words) in his head.
A crap chorus will make your song forgettable and impotent…
Anyway, we’ll talk more about the specifics of songwriting later, in future emails and videos…
