4 Tips On How To Write Your Own Book

If you didn’t already know, I wrote a book on How To Make A Song At Home earlier this year. If you’d like to learn how to make your first song all by yourself or you’d just like to be a productive member of society and support me for all the great free shit I’ve given you, you can purchase the book on amazon here.

If you’re thinking about writing a book, or you’re just curious on how it works, I’ve got 4 tips to help you write your own book:

1. Write About Something You Know About Or Do Your Research

Jay Carteré | Jay Cartere | 4 Tips On How To Write Your Own Book

It’s much easier to write about something you are familiar with. In the case of writing a non-fiction book this is a big deal. However, if you’re writing fiction, you have much more leeway with your creativeness and you are more free to use your imagination.

2. Plan What You Are Going To Cover In Your Book In Advance

This is generally called ‘outlining’. It makes the writing process much more straightforward as you don’t have to come up with ideas on what comes next. Instead, you just allow the information to flow through you.

3. Research Different Book Formats And How To Export Your Book Into These Formats

There are a variety of different formats you can release your book in (e.g mobi, epub, physical). I write my books in a program called Scrivener. Scrivener provides an array of export templates to use, but you’ll still have to learn how to edit these templates to create the type of thing you’re looking for.

4. Read Books That Are Similar To Yours

Jay Carteré | Jay Cartere | 4 Tips On How To Write Your Own Book

If you’re writing a non-fiction book, read some non-fiction books. If you’re planning to write a novel, read some novels (focus on novels in your genre, but don’t limit yourself). This may seem like simple advice, and it is, but neglecting to read books and familiarise yourself with what is acceptable and unacceptable will likely result in you writing something that doesn’t quite work. So make it easier for yourself – look at what works and use that as a template.

Again, buy my book. Don’t be an ungrateful bastard – http://amzn.to/1MCeFb2

If you’re really cheap, or you think my book’s going to be crap, download a free chapter here – http://bit.ly/1GK2Den

And if you’re having trouble writing your book, just write. The only way to move forward is to try to move forward.

How To Make A Song At Home Right Now

After enjoying a particularly chilled weekend, Monday reared its ugly little head and it was time to get back to work.

I spent the day editing and finishing up my book How To Make A Song AtJay Carteré | Jay Cartere | how to make a song at home right now Home. The book is basically going to guide you through the various steps you need to take in order to create a sick song for cheap in the comfort of your own home. For those of you who are interested, the book will cover the following sections:

  • Creating a home studio
  • Production
  • Songwriting
  • Recording
  • Mixing
  • Mastering

My aim is to make creating quality music accessible to beginners who have little idea of what they’re doing and offer helpful advice via my own experience to those who are more adept. If you want to grab that as soon as it comes out holla at me on Twitter (@JayCartere) or send a message through my contact page so I can note your name down.

Jay Carteré | Jay Cartere | how to make a song at home right nowI also released a new song called Right Now. That’s off my upcoming dance EP The Love Story (it’d be sick if you pre-ordered that). The song is about trying to prevent a break up and reconcile with a lover by focusing on the ‘right now’ and not spoiling the moment by bringing up loads of old bullshit. Let me know if you like it or nah on Twitter.

Men Can Multitask Too

Today I woke up, done my usual morning routine, added cards and annotations to both my Q&A video and my review of the new Wale album. Then I set my sites on my goals for the weekend: making beats.

About a week ago (cue shmurda dance) I set out to produce at least 5 beats a week. I had initially intended Jay Carteré|Jay Cartere|Men Can Multitask Tooto make a beat a day from Monday to Friday and then take the weekends off but things didn’t really work out that way.

I started a few different projects recently which requires me to divide my time up more efficiently, so I figured that the best way to go about it would be to focus on working on the book I’m writing early in the week and then focus on making music in the latter end of the week. I work better when I focus on a specific thing and follow it through to the end, so that’s how my 1 beat a day plan turned 5 beats in two days.

The batch production work method works wonders for me. I’m able to complete a lot of work just by focusing on getting it done first and then refining it at a later stage. However, many people don’t have the ability to intensely focus on something, for a long periodical amount of time so if that sounds like you, you may need to incorporate regular 15 minute breaks for each hour of work. Personally I prefer to work non-stop for about 2 hours, then take half an hour break instead of interrupting my work time, but try both methods out and see what works best for you.

Before I even started producing, I spent about an hour in the bath soaking up some knowledge about money management by watching a Robert Kiyosaki youtube video.

After that, I started making a beat whilst working on my production chapter from my book (see, men CAN multitask).

I spent about 3 hours on that, I ending up completing another chapter section and a half but didn’t finish the beat. Smh, multitasking is looooooooong, but I’ve got to do it in order to write this book accurately. Tomorrow I’m going to spend the day making other beats and I’ll get back to this book writing shit on Monday.

My Sleeping Pattern Is Still Fucked

Jay Carteré|Jay cartere|sleeping pattern |In my efforts to sculpt my sleeping pattern into something that resembles that of a human and not a vampire, I left a few aspects of mastering out yesterday in order to complete it today. All I had to do was listen to the project a few times on my speakers and my iPhone, but falling asleep at around 5am and getting up at 2pm didn’t help that much. I ended up spending way too much time soaking in the bath and engaging in conversations that I didn’t have the luxury to spend time on.

I did, however, do a little exercise this morning so that’s a plus.

Jay Carteré|Jay cartere|sleeping pattern |

I had planned to master and finish beats, and spend two hours writing my book on how to create a song from scratch at home (yes, I’m writing a book, big up to me, bap bap) in addition to completing the tedious mastering process I had begun yesterday.

After finishing eating dinner at 9:17 pm (late as fuck right?) I decided to spend the rest of the day working on my book since it was a bit late to be blasting these sick trap beats out my speakers. I gotta think about Jay Carteré|Jay cartere|sleeping pattern |my neighbours and shit because I am an upstanding member of society, obviously.

I spent about 2 hours and a bit on writing my book. I’ve got the first chapter done now (setting up a home studio) and I’ve outlined the rest of the chapters and sections that I’m going to include.

After that I received some feedback on my project that’s going to require me to revisit the mastering process tomorrow, how fun (!) KMT.

All in all, I had a mediocre day compared to the one I planned, but I did get 2 out of 3 things done. Plus, I did a little extra with the writing shit to make up for my lack of producing, so I’m not too disappointed.

I’m now going to attempt to correct my sleeping pattern once again. I’m going to bed at about 2am and I’m going to try and get up for 10am so I can get the most out of each hour in the day.

What did you do today? Let me know on Twitter. Or, if you didn’t take one step closer to realising your dreams today, use my travels as inspiration and embark on your journey tomorrow.
