When I start watching a new series I give it 3 – 4 episodes before I decide whether I’ll continue watching or jump ship, so this isn’t going to be a full season review. The turnaround on those is time consuming and if you haven’t seen the series yet I’m assuming you just want to know whether it’s worth watching or not, right? So, should you watch Marvel’s new Daredevil series? Let’s find out:
Let me start of by saying I have no love whatsoever for any of the series Marvel have put out so far. My good friend told me to check out Agents Of Shield and I thought that was so crap that I almost started questioning that friendship. To be honest, I haven’t seen any of the other series they have out because I assumed they’d be just as whack. However, when Daredevil came out, there was a surge of positive opinions about it floating through my Twitter timeline and I eventually decided to check it out.
The first episode was a great pilot. It set up the characters and gave me a little backstory behind the Daredevil character and I was excited to see what would happen next.
The second episode, however, did not fair so well. While the first episode had a mix of dialogue driven and action driven scenes that worked really well, the second episode was super dry and I’m not referring to the clothing brand. There was minimal to no action. Although it was understandable from a story point of view, as a viewer I was very disappointed.
The third episode though, wow, the start of the episode gave me enough visceral action to forgive the last one. The story gets even more intriguing, there are twists and turns and we are finally introduced to the legendary Wilson Fisk. This episode was so thrilling that I forgot about the pile of crap that was the second episode. Maybe this was deliberate though, because in comparison to the second episode this one seemed amazing.
Episode four delved a little deeper into some of the more interesting characters, most notably it provided some interesting character development arcs for both Daredevil and Wilson Fisk – the presumable main villain. This episode also mad me realise that this series is dark and gritty, even more so than DC’s Arrow – another series that’s quite sick – and I was impressed.
In conclusion, should you watch Marvel’s Daredevil series? Yes, absolutely. The writing is good, the story is interesting, the action is devastating and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the season. I can confidently recommend this series. Watch it now.
