In my opinion, having a home recording studio is a great investment and can save you loads of money. It’s not for everyone though- you can easily make a bunch of crap songs if you don’t know what you’re doing. However, that’s not to say you can’t make crap songs in a professional recording studio, you can. It’ll probably be sonically better though.

Are you willing to teach yourself how to record, mix and master?

Recording is the main part to be honest and that isn’t very hard at all. Mixing and mastering can be handled by sending your song to people with the relevant skills (like me). The main reason to set up your own home studio is to cut out the other people you have to pay though, so if you’re still paying out money for every song you’re not really saving as much as you could be. I’d strongly suggest that you learn about all three of these aspects in order to truly gain the benefits of a home studio.

If you’re not willing to learn though, you might be better off going to someone else’s studio.

Do you want to make music whenever you want, instead of booking time slots?

How could you say no to this right? This is one of the biggest advantages of building a home recording studio. The ability to record your songs whenever you want and the freedom to experiment in the privacy of your home is extremely freeing as a musician. Sometimes I get bursts of inspiration late at night, and having the opportunity to record myself straight away has allowed me to create many bangers while the inspiration is still fresh.

Are you serious about making music?

If you’re serious about pursuing your musical career you are going to be making a lot of songs. The best way to not go broke pursuing your dreams is to save money by investing into your career upfront. Building a recording studio at home will save you hundreds to thousands of pounds. If you’re serious about your career, you should also be excited to learn about the recording process and educate yourself so that you can make high quality songs at home and creatively manipulate your voice.

Is making music just a hobby for you?

If you want to make one song a year it may not be worth building a home studio. A simple £20/hour in someone else’s studio may be all you need to get your musical fix. However, if you want to make more than 5 songs, you’re better off building yourself a home studio for cheap and recording at your leisure.

In conclusion, unless you’re lazy or rich, it is definitely worth it for you to build a recording studio at home. You can build one for under £200 and even create a second income stream by recording and engineering other artists.
